Happy New Year!

As we approach the end of January, I want to wish you a Happy New Year, and also talk about resolutions.  Most likely for those of you who set New Year resolutions, those goals are still in full swing and keeping on track. Research has found those that actually write down their new year goals are at least 80% more likely to be successful in achieving them than those that do not write them down.

Typically I do write down my goals, and typically I have several resolutions I strive for…but not this year. This year I have only one goal, and I challenge you to join me. This year my goal is to be KIND. Ok, not that I am usually a mean person—no, no. This year I am making a concerted effort to BE MORE KIND.

I have slipped once or twice already. For example, I recently made a snippy remark about someone to another colleague. I immediately apologized.  Now, I am telling everyone my goal so I am held more accountable.

The dictionary states, kind is “of a good or benevolent nature or disposition, as a person: a kind and loving person; 2. having, showing, or proceeding from benevolence: kind words.”

Let’s apply this – Being kind is a vital way of bringing meaning to our own lives as well as the lives of others. Being kind allows us to communicate better, to be more compassionate, and also to be a positive force in people’s lives.  Wow-cool right?? The thought of being a positive force in people’s lives is really what living a purpose-filled life is all about!

A colleague’s daughter recently reached out and asked me to help celebrate her mother’s upcoming birthday. She requested I perform a random act of kindness and write to her mother about it. She was then going to compile the stories in a book for her mother. What a great idea, and such a special way to have all her mother’s friends and acquaintances be involved. I bet her mother’s new year resolution focused on being kind as well.

For all our parents out there, now is the time to model behaviors you want your children to copy. Model KINDNESS!  In January’s newsletter, we talked about making social stories.  This would be a perfect opportunity to teach to your children…and add a little kindness.

For all our donors, we thank you for your kindness and continued support to Child’s Voice.

I hope you all have an extraordinary 2018!

Be kind, be gentle, AND give love

Fondly,

Dr. Michele
