Dana Suskind, M.D.
University of Chicago
Dr. Dana Suskind is no stranger to cochlear implants and pediatric hearing matters. She is an expert in pediatric diseases of the head and neck and one of only a few cochlear implant specialists in the metropolitan Chicago area. Dana is currently Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and the Director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implantation Program at the University of Chicago.
Dana is also the author of the book, Thirty Million Words: Building A Child’s Brain, (Dutton, September 2015), and the Founder and Director of the Thirty Million Words Initiative. Based on scientific research that shows the critical importance of early language exposure on the developing child, Thirty Million Words helps parents enhance their home language environment in order to optimize their child’s brain development and, therefore, his or her ability to learn. An evidence-based intervention, Thirty Million Words is supported by a broad coalition of public and private partnerships and is an extension of Dr. Suskind’s Project ASPIRE, which she created to assure that her patients from disadvantaged backgrounds reached their full listening and spoken language potentials. Dr. Suskind’s ultimate goal, and that of her dedicated team, is to help all children reach their full potentials and to close the ever-widening achievement gap.
She first found Child’s Voice when researching for listening and spoken language options in the area and she strongly believes that Child’s Voice is the best option! She is a constant advocate for the development of spoken language in children with hearing loss.
Her passion for helping children spills over into her hobbies as well as her profession. She spends much of her time outside of work developing and managing implant and research programs to find ways to allow all children with hearing loss the opportunity for their maximum development of speech and language. Dana enjoys her involvement with Child’s Voice and looks forward to the Autumn Gala each year!
Dr. Suskind resides in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago with her three children and one dog. You can read more about Dana in a recent Chicago Tribune feature, click here<http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/ct-sun-0913-balancing-act-20150911-column.html> to see the story.
